Exceptionality Education Canada
2006 Exceptional Book of the Year

A book for parents, and for educators interested in understanding and supporting high-level development in children.
“If you want to know the reason why I am standing here, it's because of education," First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama told 100 teenage girls at a school in London, England, on April 2, 2009. "I never cut class. I loved getting A's, I liked being smart. ... I thought being smart is cooler than anything in the world."
We agree, Mrs. Obama! This is the message we’ve been sharing with people for several years, and we are delighted to see it reaching people in such an enthusiastic way. Being smart is, indeed, both cool and attainable - and there are many things that parents and educators can do to support and encourage high-level development. Based on current research, and grounded in
our own personal and professional experiences, in Being Smart about Gifted Education we make the case that giftedness
develops and can be nurtured. We consider
various voices and viewpoints, and we look at different ways of supporting
optimal development in those who have been labeled "gifted," and
those who have not.
Many colleagues have told us that Being Smart About Gifted Children is useful in their graduate courses in gifted education, in their teacher
development work, and in their teaching. Parents, too, have told us that
this is a book they’ve been wanting to read. For example, Carolyn K. ("Mrs. Hoagie" of Hoagies Gifted Education page) describes Being Smart as "the new classic must-read book for parents and teachers!" We hope that you will agree with these assessments of the book.
